History

SHUTOKAI means "the Capital Club".

The Shutokai Judo Club was formed in 1990 by Peter Moore and Ian Barry; and operated out of George Street Junior High School, Fredericton, NB.

In 1992, Clive Cannon became head Sensei after both Peter and Ian moved out of province. On October 3, 1996 the club moved from George Street to the Skyline Recreation Centre on Canterbury Drive.

Then there was a brief period in our history when our club was without a location to hold classes due to circumstances beyond the club's control.

In 2002, the Director of the Fredericton Boys and Girls Club offered the club the gym at their Canterbury Drive location, (the old Skyline Recreation Centre), which they had moved into. He offered the club any week night for the adult classes in return for teaching a children's class on Saturdays. The partnership between Shutokai Judo Club and the Boys and Girls Club of Fredericton has been very beneficial for both parties. There are now two classes a week for children, juveniles and adults.

Today, the Shutokai Judo Club has over 40 students taking judo classes, offers a women's self-defense class, and has a parents committee which does fund raising to help offset our costs.
